How to Exchange a Card Safely

Exchanging a card—whether it’s damaged, expired, or lost—requires careful steps to protect your personal and financial information. Before initiating the exchange, gather all necessary details, such as your account number (if available), contact information associated with the card, and a valid form of identification. Avoid sharing sensitive data over unsecured channels, like public Wi-Fi or unencrypted emails, as these can expose you to fraud risks.

When requesting the exchange, use only official channels provided by the card issuer. This could include the issuer’s official mobile app, secure online portal, or a verified phone number listed on your card statement. Never respond to unsolicited messages (such as emails, texts, or calls) asking for your card details or personal information, as these are common phishing attempts designed to steal your data.

Once you receive the new card, take immediate steps to activate it using the issuer’s secure method—usually via the app or a dedicated phone line. After activation, destroy the old card completely: cut it into small pieces (ensuring the chip and magnetic stripe are damaged beyond repair) and dispose of them in separate trash bags to prevent identity theft. Additionally, update any automatic payment settings linked to the old card to avoid missed payments or service disruptions.

Keep track of the exchange process by noting the date you requested the new card, the expected delivery date, and any confirmation numbers provided. If the new card doesn’t arrive within the estimated time frame, contact the issuer promptly using official contact details to report the delay. Regularly monitor your account statements in the weeks following the exchange to check for unauthorized transactions that may indicate fraud.
